We just returned from a quick weekend trip up to the Hat for a little winter getaway with friends; and as usual our neighbors to the north impressed upon me how thankful I am to live in the United States. It’s not the people in general; Canadians (or at least Albertans) have been nothing but decent and friendly, but their politics are fun (if not depressing) to watch. One could easily tape a newspaper to the wall, have a few too many Captain and Cokes, spin around sixteen times, then throw a dart in the general direction of the paper and one would hit an article that would be a conservative bloggers dream. As tempting as it is to link to one of the many, to save time I’ll just say that the difficulties experienced in these socialist utopias are on full display if anyone cares to look. Not that these failures really matter; we’ve chosen that same path, but lucky for me we’re not quite as far down the road as they are. Still, it’s depressing to take a peak at the society my kids will have to endure. At least I’ll have some good stories for them: “Son, back in my day, if we wanted a gun, an MRI, or a decent truck we didn’t have to walk 50 miles uphill both ways in the snow to get one. You don’t know how bad you’ve got it.”

As long as socialism remains an abstraction in the minds of American leftists, socialism will always be attractive to them. The reality, of course, is a joyless life of unending mediocrity and constant depression. But by the time the reality dawns, it is too late to turn back.

Posted 25 Feb 2008 at 11:17 pm ¶Hey, whatever floats your boat, Tons. I just don’t want it here in my neck of the woods. FYI, I live in fear of no one, and I think your MRI is anything but free, whether you’re breaking out your checkbook tomorrow or not.

Posted 26 Feb 2008 at 12:02 am ¶A very good friend of mine and business partner from Brookvale NSW AU had mentioned to me on several occasions that “We Am’s” have got it the best with regard to “guns”.
When the Australian government removed “guns”, the crime rate went through the roof, up over 500% in NSW alone.
You see?
The Gov can only take guns away from those who would abide by the law, but they have absolutely no control over those who don’t care about the law.
They call it “Gun Control”? When the fact of the matter is that it’s not. Gun Control only exists when law abiding citizens are allowed to have them.

Indeed, Dave. What strikes me is why those who desire gun control do so: fear. The same emotion we are accused of having for wanting firearms.

Wait, that’s not right.
Is it?
Posted 26 Feb 2008 at 8:20 pm ¶heh, even in my arc welding induced haze, that’s funny.
Posted 26 Feb 2008 at 11:00 pm ¶The presumed Canadian wrote: “Now, I’d better get to bed because I have to get up early for my FREE MRI tomorrow morning.”
The reason he is so excited is that he has been waiting seven to nine months for his “free” MRI, along with 12,000 other happy socialists. That is the current average “wait time” and the number of people standing in line for a “free” MRI in Canada today.
Of course, our Canadian friend can jump to the head of the line if he is having a medical emergency, which seems to be the case here, since he is obviously full of sh*t.
